50 in hospital as Covid cases rise

A total of 50 patients positive with Covid-19 were being treated in public hospitals on Tuesday, Okypy spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said.

The situation does not raise any concerns as none of the patients are in intensive care units, Charilaou told Alpha News.

There is an increased incidence of Covid in the general community but there are no fears of hospital units being overrun or unable to cope, he said.

“As in the past, we have a few cases of severe pneumonia; we have people with mild symptoms who have co-morbidities and need oxygen; and we have some with mild symptoms who can’t take the oral antiviral because [this would interact with their] other medications. They therefore go to hospital to get an IV form of the treatment,” he said.

Charilaou added that an increase in gastrointestinal cases was also in evidence which was predictable due to increased chances of ingesting spoiled foods as a result of the ongoing heatwaves.

It was important for the public to watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, he said.
