Tottenham have flown to Japan for next stage of pre-season

Tottenham have already taken to the field in three pre-season friendlies ahead of the new 2024/25 campaign.

Postecoglou’s side started with a behind-closed-doors fixture against Cambridge United at Hotspur Way and followed it up with further victories against Hearts and QPR.

While Spurs supporters weren’t able to watch the Cambridge match, they have seen Djed Spence included in Postecoglou‘s plans.

The right-back had enjoyed decent showings against Hearts and QPR, playing the second half in both fixtures.

Spurs insider Paul O’Keefe has revealed on X that the 23-year-old has impressed the club following his return this summer.

Spence had a disastrous first half to last season on loan at Leeds United where he made just seven appearances across all competitions (transfermarkt), before returning to Tottenham in January to head out on loan once again.

Spence has impressed Spurs this summer

His stint at Genoa in the second half of last season certainly helped to improve his reputation with a solid display with the Serie A outfit.

The right-back has been the subject of interest of a permanent transfer to Genoa, however, a deal has unable to be reached with both clubs unable to agree a fee below the £8.5m option to buy included in his contract last season (BBC).

Spence was yesterday included in the travelling party for Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea, while Bryan Gil and Sergio Reguilon were left behind to seek transfers away from the club.

Sometimes it is hard to not get ahead of yourself when a player who looks to have no future at the club, starts to impress.

We saw the same with Giovani Lo Celso last summer, who was arguably Tottenham’s best player in pre-season and was given a chance by Ange Postecoglou to remain with the squad.

If Spence continues on this same path, it would certainly make a potential departure of Emerson Royal an easier task if the Englishman is prepared to provide cover or battle it out with Pedro Porro for a place in the starting XI.
