NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – Monmouth University was placed on lockdown overnight after there was an unfounded threat of a shooter on campus overnight, according to the Monmouth County Prosecutor.

The lockdown was first announced around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and lifted around 8:30 a.m., officials said.

Students and faculty received an email claiming there was someone armed and hiding on campus and there was a "dangerous device" placed on campus, according to the prosecutor's office.

The email prompted a lockdown, but officials' investigation revealed no valid threat.

University police and outside agencies checked residence halls and conducted building searches, school representatives said.

Campus is scheduled to open delayed at 10 a.m., with classes starting after 11 a.m.
