Holiday spots cheaper to visit now than they were last summer – with up to 22% off top destinations

A LIST of holiday destinations that are cheaper to visit this summer than they were last year has been revealed.

Bagging a late summer bargain isn’t always easy, but new data has shown that trips to some places are going down in price, rather than up.

Included in that are some top city break destinations like Berlin and Marrakech, while beach destinations like Mallorca also feature.

Numbers produced by travel search engine Kayak shows that there are some destinations as much as 22 per cent cheaper to visit this summer than the same time last year.

The travel company looked at average flight prices between August 2024 and August 2023.

These numbers are based on flight searches made on Kayak in the period between 01/06/2024 and 25/06/2024 for flights with departure dates between 01/07/2024 and 31/08/2024 from any UK airport.

All prices are average prices for economy, return tickets.

It turns out that Istanbul came out on top, with the average cost of a return flight £278 this year, almost a quarter less than it was last summer.

The Turkish city is famous for its Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, its Grand Bazaar and Blue Mosque, among other sites.

Once there, it’s also pretty affordable, with a beer rarely costing more than £3 and

A night in a hotel there for two can be booked from around £16.

It was one of several popular holiday destinations for Brits to be included among the 11 places on the list.

They also include Marrakech, which is 18 per cent cheaper this year than it was last.

The average cost of a return trip to the Moroccan city are £240.

Return summer flights to Barcelona are around £146 on average, 15 per cent less than they were in 2023.

There was also a 15 per cent reduction in the price of flights to Mallorca this year, with the average round trip setting back visitors around £176 this year.

The price for a trip to Berlin has fallen too, with flights to the German capital now around 11 per cent cheaper than they were last year, at £149.

Other less-frequently visited destinations that are now cheaper to visit than they were 12 months ago include Hong Kong, Tirana in Albania, both New Delhi and Kochi in India, Lagos in Nigeria and the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.

Rachel Mumford, one of the travel experts at Kayak said: “Our data reveals that it’s not too late to get away this summer, with August still presenting an ideal time for travellers to explore popular destinations without stretching their wallets.”

Rachel also explained how to use Kayak’s latest feature, which compares prices from across the internet using AI to find the cheapest available routes.

She added: “Those looking to get away and keep an eye on their budget can use our new AI-powered tool, Kayak’s PriceCheck.

“Just take a screenshot of a flight itinerary from any site, upload it to the Kayak app, and we’ll compare the price against hundreds of sites to see if you can get a better price.”
