Dujardin is a six-time Olympic gold medalist and she won two gold medals in London in the individual and team dressage.

But she is now being investigated by the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) and will “withdraw from all competition while this process takes place”.

She released a statement commenting on the video, saying: “What happened was completely out of character and does not reflect how I train my horses or coach my pupils, however there is no excuse.

“I am deeply ashamed and should have set a better example in that moment.

“I am sincerely sorry for my actions and devastated that I have let everyone down, including Team GB, fans and sponsors.

“I will cooperate fully with the FEI, British Equestrian Federation and British Dressage during their investigations, and will not be commenting further until the process is complete.”

The British Equestrian Federation and British Dressage are also looking into the video, which was filmed four years ago.

Dujardin, 39, was named in the Team GB squad for Paris where she was due to compete in the individual and team events.

She was just one medal away from holding the all-time record for a British female athlete – she is tied on six with cyclist Laura Kenny.

Dujardin followed up her two gold medal haul in 2012 with Individual dressage gold in Rio four years later, while the team won silver with her help.

She then won two bronzes in both events in Tokyo on a different horse, Gio, and she was set to ride Imhotep in Paris.
