'America's Hitler': Eric Swalwell throws Vance's attack on Trump in GOP's face at hearing

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) reminded his Republican colleagues that their vice presidential candidate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), called former President Donald Trump "Hitler" before an assassination attempt.

At a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Tuesday, Swalwell said Republicans had tried to use the attempted assassination of Trump to "erase" the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

"Some are trying to rewrite what has happened in our country over the last eight years, erase what happened in this building on January 6th," he explained. "One member of this body in Congress said the Republican district attorney in Butler County should immediately file charges against Joseph Biden for inciting assassination."

"Another said ... for years Democrats and their allies have recklessly stoked fears, calling President Trump and others threats to democracies," he continued. "Another said Democrats and liberals in the media have called Trump a fascist."

Swalwell noted that Republicans had accused Democrats of comparing Trump to Adolf Hitler.

"In fact, the president – the former president's current vice presidential nominee is the one who said that Donald Trump might be America's Hitler, might be a cynical a-hole, cultural heroine... noxious and reprehensible," Swalwell said, citing Vance's quotes from a Fox News report.

"We're not going to erase and rewrite and allow some to reincarnate themselves as victims of what happened," he insisted. "In this country, violence has never been the answer."
