Pit bull shot at Staten Island park during dog attack: US Park Police

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) – A pit bull was shot Sunday following two dog attacks at Great Kills Park in Staten Island, according to United States Park Police.

Visitors flagged to park police that two dogs were running loose. Officers saw one of the dogs, both believed to be pit bulls, attacking a visitor's dog, according to authorities.

One of the officers was then bitten while they tried to intervene in the dog attack, per park police. The other loose pit bull lunged at another officer.

That's when two officers fired at the dogs, hitting one of the pit bulls, according to authorities.

Officers were able to enclose the pit bulls before the NYPD stepped in and sedated them, per park police. The two dogs were brought to an animal hospital.

Another victim later contacted park police and said their dogs were attacked earlier that morning in the same area, according to authorities.
