NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Three people, including two New Orleans police officers, were injured during a disturbance call in Gentilly on Monday, authorities said.

The New Orleans Police Department reported officers responded to a call in the 1200 block of Riviera Avenue regarding a 70-year-old woman whose arm had allegedly been cut off with a chainsaw around 2 p.m.

Two officers then went to a home in the 3500 block of Franklin Avenue, where they reported finding a man who NOPD investigators identified as the suspect, 34-year-old John Pittman.

According to the NOPD, Pittman resisted his arrest, which caused a fall downstairs. Officers tased him, and Pittman suffered abrasions and lost a tooth. One of the officers suffered abrasions and injuries to their head, neck and right lower leg. The other officer was bitten in the left arm.

NOPD officials said the suspect is believed to be the woman's son.

Both officers were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries and are in stable condition. The victim was also taken to a hospital and was last reported to be in critical condition.

On Tuesday, July 23, the NOPD reported one of the officers was back at work and the other is expected to return to work in a few days.
