LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- The New York State Department of Conservation (DEC) will reopen nine camping and day-use sites in the Narrow Island group of Lake Geroge Islands that were closed due to storm damage. Two campsites on Hatchet Island and seven on Floating Battery Island will reopen Wednesday, July 24.

The DEC first announced many camping and day-use sites would be closed until further notice on July 17, following storm damage to all eight islands on the evening of July 16.

The remaining sites will be closed until trees are cleaned up and the docks and infrastructure within those sites are repaired. The DEC estimates between 200 and 300 trees were down, with 20 tables, six outhouses, seven tent platforms and seven docks were damaged on the islands.

Since July 17, the DEC has deployed over 60 maintenance operators to the islands every day, to ensure the sites are safe and ready to open. The remaining six campsites on Floating Battery Island, as well as those on Cooper, Duran, Sagamore and St. Sacrament islands will be closed roughly until July 30, according to the DEC.
