Attorney says Round Rock shooting suspect has 'never been in serious trouble'

GEORGETOWN, Texas (KXAN) -- One of three people arrested for the deadly shooting in Round Rock during a Juneteenth celebration on June 15 was in a Williamson County courtroom on Tuesday.

Seventeen-year-old Ricky Thompson stayed behind closed doors while talking to his attorney. The teen faces a deadly conduct charge.

That shooting left two people dead and another 14 injured. Police said the shooting happened because of an argument between him and others. Court documents describe that argument as stemming from an ongoing dispute between two rap groups.

"This should not happen in Williamson County. And we are going to do everything we can to hold everyone responsible for this offense," said Williamson County District Attorney Shawn Dick.

Dick said more charges could be coming in the case, while also alluding to more people being charged.

Thompson's attorney, Amber Vazquez, described him as a normal kid in high school.

"He's a junior in high school who's never been in serious trouble. We really look forward to getting all of the facts," Vazquez said.

Two others were also arrested in this case. They include an 18-year-old and a juvenile.

Round Rock police said it is still actively investigating the crime.

Thompson is expected back in court on Sept. 11.
