Local festivals celebrate fruits, trees and nuts of the season

Festival season remains strong this summer. In between the big concerts featuring local artists and musicians from abroad are local festivals that celebrate the produce and traditions of Cyprus. Coming up in the next few days and weeks are three festivals that honour the fruits, trees and nuts of the season in true Cyprus fashion – with music, food and village fun.

On Friday, the Watermelon Dance (O Horos tou Karpouziou) will return to Akaki village to praise the most celebrated summer fruit. Of course, watermelons from the region will be the protagonist of the festival along with ice-cold cocktails and other produce.

As always, the festival is organised to promote the watermelon farmers of Akaki and showcase the watermelon spoon sweet the village produces. The musical ensemble Ta Kefia will entertain guests on the evening while food and drinks are served.

Another village, Platanistasa will host the annual Hazel Tree Fest, a two-day occasion on Saturday and Sunday. Guided tours to the hazel tree forest of the area, music and dance programmes, a market with local creations and products and visits to village landmarks will entertain festivalgoers.

Next month, Kato Mylos will hold its annual Peach Festival. On August 17, peach delights will fill the old elementary school and the Rodakinio Cultural centre while chef Chryso Lefou demonstrates how to make peach jam, peach liqueur and fluffy pies. Other activities will include bread-making, a shadow theatre performance and live music by local artists.
