‘It’s a lovely dress…for a bride’, people say as mother-of-the-bride shares gown she wants to wear to daughter’s wedding

A MOTHER-of-the-bride has come under fire for the controversial dress she wants to wear to her daughter’s wedding.

A photo of the dress was shared online by the bride, who asked for people’s opinion on the colour.

However, the near-white colour wasn’t the only reason that people raised their eyebrows at the dress.

The bride had written on Reddit: “Is this an appropriate dress colour for the mother of the bride? (My mother).

“I expected something flashy, and I am okay with flashy.

“I was not expecting white.

“She already purchased it before I could see it.

“The dress does come in a few other colours. I would have preferred the pink option.”

The strapless ball gown had ruffles down the side and looked like it could be worn by the bride herself, according to internet users.

People rushed to the comments to share their views, and didn’t hold back.

One said: “It is a lovely dress for a wedding.

“For the bride.”

Another added: “You have to be kidding! This is a bridal gown. This is incredibly inappropriate.”

A third commented: “This looks like an actual wedding dress.

“Since it’s your mother, you make the call. I assume you’re just trying to prove to her that this dress is super not appropriate though?”

The bride responded to the criticism of the dress saying: “I am trying to see past who she is and who I am, and just see the dress from an outside perspective, so I can form a more concrete opinion on if i am going to ask her to take it back.”

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

Someone replied, saying: “Ask her to take it back. If you need to, tell a white lie.

“Say something, because it’s obvious this bothers you (and I don’t blame you), and you don’t want this hanging over you while wedding planning.”

However, some defended the mum’s bold choice.

One said: “Champagne is actually a traditional MOB/MOG dress colour so I wouldn’t read into it at all.”

According to Brides.com, traditionally, the mother of the bride’s gown “should complement (but not match) the colour of the wedding party’s attire.”

They advise: “For instance, if the bridal party is wearing black cocktail dresses, as the mum, you might want to choose something in silver or grey.

“Or, if the bridesmaids are wearing cobalt blue, a navy dress would pair perfectly.”
