Delta Airlines faces investigation over flight delays, cancellations
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- Delta passengers continue to deal with massive cancellations and flight delays after the global Microsoft outage on Friday.
An investigation into the Atlanta-based airline is in effect, according to federal officials. Passengers were still unable to return home or go on their dream vacation as of Tuesday.
Delta's CEO said the issue would be resolved in a few more days.
Carlos and his family are walking out of LaGuardia Airport Tuesday evening instead of flying back home to Atlanta as they had planned.
“Got delayed three times, and it finally got canceled,” he said.
They are among the Delta customers experiencing a travel nightmare. The airline has canceled and delayed hundreds of flights after the CrowdStrike software update that crashed Windows systems for a fifth straight day.
“They booked us on a flight tomorrow to Chicago and then from there to Atlanta,” added Carlos.
While most airlines affected by the software glitch went back to normal operations by the end of the weekend, Delta is facing problems with the crew tracking system needed to staff flights.
Diane and her family came back to New York from Orlando, Florida. She said waiting at the airport for more than five hours was not how they wanted to end their vacation.
“It is just difficult when you have a little one because we were in the airport three hours before check-in,” Diane said.
At least 62 flights were canceled and 141 flights had been delayed at the three major New York area airports on Tuesday evening, according to FlightAware.
The U.S. Department of Transportation has launched an investigation into Delta Airlines, Secretary Pete Buttigieg saying it is specifically into the company's breakdown of operations and customer service.
“I’m hearing a lot of things. I am very concerned about people being on hold for hours trying to get a new flight, people having to sleep on airport floors, even unaccompanied minors stranded on airports not being able to get on a flight,” stated Buttigieg.
Delta Airlines told PIX11 News that it fully cooperates with the investigation and covers eligible expenses resulting from flight disruptions.
