The Toronto Metropolitan University, Department of Architectural Science will be hosting an internationally recognized architecture exhibition about women in architecture entitled Buone Nuove: Good News from Italy, and has issued an open call for participation.

The exhibition first opened at the MAXXI museum in Rome in 2022. After traveling to Stockholm, Doha, New Delhi and Berlin, Buone Nuove/Good News will open at TMU’s Paul H. Cocker Gallery in the Department of Architectural Science for its inaugural North American showing on September 5, 2024.

Curated by Pippo Ciorra, Elena Motisi and Elena Tinacci, this traveling exhibition features works and words of dozens of Italian and global women architects who are empowering a new generation of inclusive city-builders and have changed the field of architecture. To complement the exhibition, TMU is curating a display of women architects working in and around Toronto who are impacting communities and the city through built works, practice innovation, leadership, mentorship, and advocacy.

To celebrate the range of people and projects empowering women in architecture and diversity in design, TMU has issued a call to submit a “Postcard to Progress,” consisting of a pairing of image and text that will be displayed and exchanged during the exhibition. Contributions may take different forms—such as a description of a project or initiative mobilizing knowledge about women architects and their work, a manifesto, provoking questions, thoughts and/or actions toward greater diversity in design, or a personal memory, memo or message to architects or the public.

“This is no simple exhibition of women in architecture – but a bold assembly of the stories, practices, narrations and visions that are changing and challenging the field for the better. In this first display of the MAXXI exhibit in North America, we are adding a curated exhibit of prominent women architects in and around Toronto, and an open call for postcards from anyone supporting diversity in design to feature the many projects and people working to make the built environment more inclusive and inspiring,” said Dr. Lisa Landrum, chair of TMU’s Department of Architectural Science.

“We hope to receive hundreds of postcards. This is a living and open story of women in architecture and diversity in the field – future-oriented, intersectional and transgenerational.”

Submissions are open to anyone supporting women and diversity in architecture in the Toronto/Tkaronto region including students, interns, professionals, educators, researchers, writers, artists, makers and community members.

Multiple submissions are welcome and may be submitted by August 15.
