Several members of the Indian T20 World Cup-winning squad are expected to make a comeback in the T20 series (beginning later this week) against Sri Lanka. Within all this chit-chat, Hardin Pandya has been the most discussed player in the upcoming series. He was fixed to take over theT20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma, as he was the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup team. Still the selectors picked Suryakumar Yadav as an option, as they had concerns about the all-rounder’s fitness, and so they questioned his availability as team India is now under work for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Despite the discussions outside the field, few backed the move while others showed sympathy for Hardik, the cricketer seemed in a rather joyful mood as India had their first practise session at Pallekele International Stadium on Tuesday before the 3-match series.

Pandya was spotted having a long chat with the new head coach Gautam Gambhir at the training session. Later, he had to chance to go against Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubhman Gill, who were asked to attack all bowlers in the 40-minute training session they had.

Pandya batted under the supervision of new assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who later put him in a situation of match. During that simulation practice, Hardik hit a shot through the point and immediately claimed it to be a boundary, but Nayar disagreed saying that he had a fielder placed in that area. When Hardik asked for him to show the exact placement of the fielder. Nayar pointed towards the position, where the fielder on a red T-shirt was standing.

When Hardik insisted, Nayar asked the reporter about the shot. He said, “If you have placed your fielder here, then it’s a boundary.” This response left both Nayar and Pandya in shock as Nayar misunderstood the reporter for a fan, which the reporter later clarified.
