Popular nuts are pulled from shelves over fears they may release CYANIDE in terrifying health warning

POPULAR nuts have been urgently recalled over fears they “may contain cyanide”.

A food company has issued a recall on their nuts amid concerns that the product could pose a serious health risk.

A food company has pulled their nuts from shelves

Leo’s Import Export & Trading Ltd has pulled Buram Nuts in Syrup from shelves in the UK.

The recall comes after it was discovered that the nuts contain apricot kernels, which can release hydrogen cyanide when eaten, making them dangerous to consume.

The recall has been extended to include all best before dates of the 420g product, following an update by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

The product is feared to contain foreign bodies and apricot kernels, which pose a risk due to the potential release of hydrogen cyanide upon consumption, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said.

This makes them unsafe to eat.

Leo’s Import Export & Trading Ltd has issued a recall notice to its customers.

A spokesman for the FSA said: “Leo’s Import Export & Trading Ltd is recalling the above product.

“The company has issued a recall notice to its customers.

“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.

“This product may contain foreign bodies and also contains apricot kernels.

“The release of hydrogen cyanide from the apricot kernels when consumed makes this product unsafe to eat.”

CONSUMER ADVICE

If you have purchased the product do not consume it.

Instead, return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund. Alternatively, you can contact Leo’s Import Export & Trading Ltd directly for a refund.

When a food product poses a potential risk to consumers, it may be withdrawn from sale or recalled.

The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to inform consumers and local authorities about food safety issues.

In certain cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued, providing specific instructions to local authorities on how to protect consumers.

Signs and symptoms of cyanide poisoning

The symptoms of poisoning will depend on the type of poison and the amount taken in, but general things to look out for include:

  • Being sick
  • Stomach pains
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness and fainting fits

If a child suddenly develops these symptoms, they may have been poisoned, particularly if they’re drowsy and confused.

What to do:

The NHS advises: “If you suspect that someone has been poisoned, do not try to treat them yourself. Get medical help immediately.

“If they do not appear to be seriously ill, call NHS 111 for advice.

“If they’re showing signs of being seriously ill, such as being sick, loss of consciousness, drowsiness or seizures (fits), call 999 to request an ambulance or take the person to your local A&E department.

“In serious cases, it may be necessary for the person to stay in hospital for treatment.”
