Here are some ideas . . .

CHOCOLATE SPREAD: Kids love Nutella sandwiches but a smaller pot of the spread costs £3.45, so why not try making your own.

Bake 100g of hazelnuts on a low heat for 15 minutes. When cooled, blitz to a paste.

Melt 100g of chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water. Add a pinch of salt and 75ml of milk.

Mix together with the melted chocolate and store in a sterilised jar for two to three weeks.

OATY BARS: Organix oaty bars are a great alternative to chocolate or sweets. A six-pack is around £3 but making your own is straightforward.

This adapted Asda recipes makes 16, working out at 18p a bar.

Melt 200g of unsalted butter and 200g of brown sugar in a pan over a low heat. Mix 300g of oats and 50g of plain flour in a bowl and pour in the melted sugar and butter then stir thoroughly.

Add optional extras such as 50g of raisins, seeds, chopped dates or chocolate chips.

Press the mix into a baking tin lined with baking paper then place back at 160C for 30 minutes until golden.

SAUSAGE ROLLS: These always go down well and this adapted Tesco recipe produces 16 at 32p each.

Roll out a pack of ready-rolled puff pastry on a floured surface and cut in half lengthways. Spread with apple sauce or leave plain.

Squeeze out the sausage meat from your favourite six-pack of bangers and lay strips down the centre of the pastry.

Brush the edge with a beaten egg and fold over the meat, pinching to seal.

Cut into equal pieces and brush with egg. Cook for 20 minutes in a preheated oven at 220C until golden.
