Video: Smoke fills terminal at New York's JFK Airport, injuring 9

QUEENS, N.Y. (WPIX) – At least nine people were injured after an escalator fire broke out at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens on Wednesday.

According to FDNY, the fire started around 7 a.m. ET, sending smoke billowing into Terminal 8.

About 100 people were evacuated from the terminal, according to Port Authority.

A video posted to Citizen App showed police, firefighters and ambulances surrounding the terminal. Passengers, with luggage in tow, were also seen standing outside of the airport.

In other videos posted to social media, which you can see below, smoke can be seen filling the terminal, setting off the smoke alarms as passengers gathered with their luggage. In one video, it appears at least two airport employee, wearing a brightly-colored vest, is filming the smoke.

At least nine people were injured, according to the FDNY. One person refused medical attention and eight others were taken to local hospitals for further evaluation.

Operations at the terminal have resumed and the cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Port Authority.
