‘Quiz Lady’ could be the key to Sandra Oh’s overdue Emmy after 14 nominations

Over the past 20 years, Sandra Oh has been a darling of the Emmys, accumulating 14 nominations across multiple genres. But surprisingly, she hasn’t won yet. This year she’s nominated for Best TV Movie for producing “Quiz Lady,” in which she also stars with Awkwafina as sisters trying to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. It looks like a close race as none of the five films in the category have any other nominations, so knowing that this is a chance to finally award Oh her first Emmy might tip the scales in her favor.

Oh’s Emmy journey started with “Grey’s Anatomy,” which earned her five straight noms for Best Drama Supporting Actress (2005-2009). Then came the cat-and-mouse thriller “Killing Eve,” for which she received four noms for Best Drama Actress (2018-2020, 2022) and two for Best Drama Series (2019-2020). While that show was in its heyday she also hosted the Golden Globes and picked up a nom for Best Variety Special (Live) in 2019. That same season she hosted “Saturday Night Live” and contended for Best Comedy Guest Actress. “Quiz Lady” is (she hopes) lucky number-14.

As of this writing the front-runner in the category is “Mr. Monk’s Last Case,” but movies based on past series haven’t had any luck in recent years; continuations of “Ray Donovan,” “Breaking Bad,” “Deadwood,” and “Reno 911!” are among the Best TV Movie nominees that have lost. Voters seem to prefer original content, which benefits “Quiz Lady.” Oh’s film is also a proven winner, having beaten “Monk” at the Critics Choice and Writers Guild Awards in addition to a nomination from the Producers Guild (“Monk” also got a Producers Guild nom, but both films lost to “Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea”).

“Quiz Lady” currently ranks second in the category with one Expert journalist predicting it to win, as well as three Gold Derby Editors, four of our Top 24 Users and five of our All-Star Top 24. So it’s clearly within striking distance. And Oh might be as close to Emmy gold as she has ever been.
