Commenting on a post in the Facebook group Gardening Hints Tips and DIY crafters on the Tedooo app, one homeowner shared the DIY hack he uses to tackle ants on his lawn.

According to the online user, you probably already have everything you need at home.

He explained that his trick relies on the insect’s heightened sense of smell.

According to the commenter, you should focus on the root of your ant problem for the best results.

“Clove oil around and in the nest helps,” he revealed.

“Ants don’t like the smell and will leave the area.”

Clove oil is available in most pharmacies, including Boots, where it costs just £2.99.

Experts at Proof Pest Control reported on the key ingredient in clove oil which helps tackle ants.

The product contains eugenol, which acts as a natural and instant insecticide.

It is reported to be neurotoxic, meaning it kills inspecting by targeting their nervous systems.

The Facebook user also credited another household buy for deterring ants.

He revealed that sprinkling a small amount of a common bathroom product can help your pest problem.

“Talcum powder around the nest is also fairly effective,” he told his fellow social media users.

You can pick up a bottle of talcum powder for just £1.40 at your local Waitrose.

Pest control expert Dan Stein, author of Dan’s Practical Guide to Least Toxic Home Pest Control, explained that ants refuse to cross the substance.

Mind-blowing ants

Ants are fascinating critters with some very unique skills and traits.

There are actually more than 12,000 different types of ant in the world.

They are also the longest living insect around.

While some insects only live for a couple of days, Pogonomyrmex Owyheei ant can live up to 30 years.

It’s also well-known that ants are one of the strongest creatures around compared to their size.

A single ant can lift objects up to 50 times its own weight.

Ants don’t have ears – and some don’t have eyes either.

Instead, they rely on vibrations to detect what’s around them.

For the eye-less ants, they use their antennae to communicate with other ants.

They can also send a chemical signal, telling nest mates of possible dangers or to win over a potential lover.

Heritage Pest Control reported on the use of the product in tackling ants.

The professionals recommended sprinkling a line of talcum powder around an ant nest.

You can also use it to block any entrance points in your home.

It can even be used to herd the insects away from areas where they tend to congregate.

They pointed out that it is also safe for use in homes with small children and pets as it is non-toxic.
