A brand new revival of the hit Nickelodeon series made the change after the programme’s writers acknowledged its potential offence.

The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, is the third series in the programme’s franchise but is the first to eliminate the use of the name Poof.

Poof was the son of protagonist Timmy Turner’s two fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda.

Cosmo and Wanda’s role on the show was to grant Timmy various wishes to solve his different problems.

However, in the show’s new series, Poof has been renamed Peri and finds himself serving as a fairy godparent for the first time.

Announcing his name change during the show’s opening episode, the newly-named Peri said: “Hey kid, I’m Poof — or at least I was.

“I changed my name to Peri, like Peri-winkle.”

Series producer Ashleigh Crystal Harrison clarified the name change as she said: “The former name is a slur in many countries and cannot be used.”

In the latest revival, Peri is the godparent to Dev Dimmadome, a brand new character introduced as the grandson of original series favourite Doug Dimmadome.

The FairlyOdd Parents first began airing on Nickelodeon in 2001 after initially being brought to life as a series of shorts in 1998 on the channel’s shorts strand Oh Yeah! Cartoons.

It first came to an end in 2006 after 80 episodes but soon came back once again just two years ago.

The original edition came to an end once again 2018 before being followed by two brand new spin-offs.

A live-action series, The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, was then launched in 2022 followed by the latest animated go-around.

Fairly OddParents: A New Wish is now streaming on Netflix.
