The show debuted on Showtime back in 2021, but was axed there after just one season.

Amazon Prime Video revived the series for a second outing, before also deciding to cease production of the crime drama.

Alongside Jeff, the cast also includes Maura Tierney, David Alvarez, Mark Pellegrino and Rob Yang, among others.

Hearing of the show’s cancellation, one fan wrote on X: “Just finished American Rust season 2. Great show.

“And discovered it’s been cancelled again. I hope another network picks it up.”

Another wrote: “No way! Has American Rust been cancelled?”

A third penned: “I think @netflix should pick #AmericanRust up for season three.

“Season two was awesome — imagine what Netflix could do with it!”

Meanwhile, a fellow fan addressed Prime Video directly, writing: “So tell me, what do we need to do to change your mind about a third season of “American Rust“…!?

“The series is to good to be cancelled….!”

Dan Futterman adapted Philipp Meyer’s 2009 novel into a television series.

The nine-episode first season originally aired between September 12 to November 7, 2021.

After being acquired by Prime Video, the second season (subtitled Broken Justice) streamed ten episodes on March 28.

It comes as show star Maura Tierney already has a new gig lined up following the axing of American Rust.

The actress has signed up to join the iconic Law & Order as a new series regular in season 24.

Previously, the flagship NBC crime drama ended in 2010 after 20 seasons, but was revived from 2022 onwards.

Maura, 59, will be joining an ensemble including Reid Scott, Mehcad Brooks, Hugh Dancy, Odelya Halevi and Tony Goldwyn.

That show’s cast shakeup comes amid two fan-favourite stars exiting  last season.
