Firefighters sent to the scene of a fatal crash were heartbroken to find the victim was one of their colleagues.

Glenn Campbell, 21, was killed when his motorbike collided with a tanker in East Lothian last Wednesday morning.

His co-workers at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were among the emergency workers who responded to the crash on the B1345 between the villages of Dirleton and Drem.

Area Commander Marc Pincombe paid tribute to Mr Campbell, saying he was a ‘well respected and loved’ firefighter.

He said: ‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of our friend and colleague Glenn Campbell, who passed away on Wednesday, July 17.

‘Glenn was a well-respected and loved firefighter at North Berwick Community Fire Station.

‘Our thoughts are with Glenn’s family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.’

Mr Campbell’s girlfriend, Paige Whyte, described him as her ‘soulmate’.

She said: ‘Not many people say soulmates exist. I was one of them until Glenn Campbell came into my life. He was my beautiful, amazing boy. I feel so lost without him.

‘I could talk about Glenn all day, there was not one bad thing about him. He made me laugh and he had compassion for others.

‘He loved his family, he loved his friends, he loved me, but no one could stop his love for motorbikes.’

Police Scotland Sergeant Barry Sommerville said: ‘Our enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of this collision in which a man sadly died, and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

‘I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have dash-cam footage, and has not yet spoken to or provided this information to officers, to contact us as soon as possible.’
