Thirty-four-year-old in hospital with heatstroke

A 34-year-old man is intubated at Nicosia general hospital’s intensive care unit with heatstroke, the state health services organisation (Okypy) said on Thursday.

“Yesterday afternoon, a 34-year-old man was transported to Nicosia general, where doctors determined he had heatstroke. The individual was intubated and is being care for in the intensive care unit as is his condition is serious,” said spokesman for Okypy Charalambos Charilaou.

Charliaou added that the 34-year-old is the second person with heatstroke in the hospital.

He said that a 25-year-old woman, who was also in hospital for the past few days is getting better.

“We hope in the next few days she can be released and sent home,” he said.

Another two women, 67 and 80, that had been previously in the hospital with heatstroke have already been released.

A few days ago, a 64-year-old woman who had been in hospital with heatstroke died.

Soaring temperatures exceeding 42C have led to increasing cases of heat exhaustion, Charilaou said at the time.

Charilaou added that the people seeking medical help are of all ages, from children to the elderly.

He said it was important to heed the met service warnings and stay in a cool place during the heat peak hours and drink plenty of fluids.
