New Paltz man convicted by jury of sexual abuse

KINGSTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- According to the Ulster County District Attorney's Office, a New Paltz man was convicted of sexual abuse and unlawful imprisonment on Friday by a jury. Alixandro Peraza Varela, 45, faces up to seven years in state prison.

Peraza Varela is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her car on February 24, 2023. Her car had been stuck in mud so she called a family friend, Peraza Varela, and when he helped her she offered to pay him but he suggested she could pay him in other ways, according to the DA's Office.

This is when Peraza Varela allegedly sexually assaulted the woman. She called her husband immediately after and was taken to the hospital to get medical attention for her injuries.

Peraza Varela will face a minimum of two years and a maximum of seven years in prison following sentencing on October 4. He will also be required to register with the New York State Sex Offender Registry.
