Assassin’s Creed apologises to fans and explains the games are works of fiction

ASSASSIN’S Creed as a series is all about exploration, stealth, and secret assassinations.

Each game in the series is set in an area during a time of historical significance, such as Victorian London, or Paris during the French Revolution.

While real historic events can be depicted, such as the assassination of Julius Caesar, Ubisoft often adds its own fictional flair.

In Assassin’s Creed 2, protagonist Ezio takes part in a fist fight with the Pope under the Vatican.

Assassin’s Creed does depict some historical events, but they always have a sensational action-packed flair.

Despite Assassin’s Creed’s history of bombastic plotlines, people have criticised Ubisoft after watching the trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

A lot of the criticism involves the choice of protagonist Yasuke, a real life retainer of Oda Nobynaga who originally came from Africa.

While the other protagonist is a fictional ninja named Naoe, people were mad about featuring Yasuke without maintaining historical accuracy.

People complained that they wanted to play as a Japanese samurai instead of Yasuke, and complained that playing as Yasuke wouldn’t feel historically accurate.

Ubisoft has now responded to the criticism, reminding players that Assassin’s Creed games are works of fiction.

The statement reads: “Since the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we have received many positive reactions, but also some criticism, including from you, our Japanese players.

“Our intention has never been to present any of our Assassin’s Creed games, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, as factual representations of history, or historical characters.

“Assassin’s Creed Shadows is first and foremost, designed to be an entertaining video game that tells a compelling, historical fiction set in Feudal Japan.

“Based on the constructive criticism we have received, we will continue our efforts until we put this game into your hands – and beyond.”
