As San Diego Comic-Con gets underway this weekend, one major presence will be largely absent: DC movies. While previous Comic-Cons have seen major announcements and footage reveals related to upcoming DC films — including the unveiling of the first trailer for “Man of Steel” and the announcement of “Batman v. Superman” — the banner, under new leadership from James Gunn and Peter Safran, opted not to have a panel at the annual confab for Gunn’s “Superman,” their inaugural superhero film.

While the movie is close to wrapping production, Safran told TheWrap they decided not to bring the film or any footage to Comic-Con because the release date is still a full year away.

“From my perspective, it’s just too soon,” Safran said, acknowledging that “Superman” doesn’t hit theaters until July 11, 2025, and they’re not ready to start that marketing campaign.

“A year is truthfully a long time for a campaign and so, from our perspective, I think we go stronger and harder over a shorter period, rather than stretching it out. That’s our instinct on that,” Safran said.

Safran also discussed the expectation of delivering on their first film as part of a revitalized and renewed DC Films.

“James hasn’t wrapped yet. I think when you put your first foot forward, for us, for our first theatrical live-action experience, there’s a lot of expectation on that,” the DC Studios co-CEO continued. “And we really have to make sure we deliver every step of the way, but certainly with the first time out. So that’s why we opted not to be there.”

But Safran assured fans that the wait for release won’t be bereft of the Man of Steel: “Believe me, there’s gonna be no shortage of Superman in your life over the next 12 months,” he added.

“Superman” is the inaugural DC Studios film, which is currently in production, and is part of “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” of the relaunch of the new DC Universe that also aims to include a new “Supergirl” movie, a “Brave and the Bold” Batman film and more, as well as Max series like Gunn’s upcoming animated show “Creature Commandos.”

The “Superman” cast features Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and newcomer David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel. Other cast members include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois LaneNathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister TerrificMaría Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. Additionally, Skyler Gisondo joined the cast as Jimmy Olsen and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. Wendell Pierce recently joined the cast as Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief Perry White.
