The use of boats did not win over fans

A procession of athletes from each participating country on 85 boats travelled down the river.

They were joined by performers, including cabaret dancers and special guest Lady Gaga.

Fans also flocked to bridges and buildings overlooking the river to catch a glimpse of enthusiastic athletes waving their nation’s flag with pride.

But viewers watching on from home were left a little confused by the boats, and felt the ceremony should have taken place at the host stadium – Stade de France.

One reacted to the ceremony saying: “I’m sorry but this has to be the worst Olympic opening ceremony in memory.

“It’s an interesting idea bringing the athletes in on boats but it looks rubbish and misses the roar of the crowd. Sorry but not for me.

Another added: “Utterly wild that some nations are on a little boat on their own like I cannot.”

A third wrote: “It’s like, a nice concept but almost like they didn’t really think it through properly? Feel it would have been better in the dark with lasers projecting the flags or something. All feels a bit flat.”

And another commented: “Ya no this sucks. Athletes deserved better than f*****g boats. It is completely different than walking into a huge stadium and just having people around you cheer.”

And a further fan posted: “Couldn’t they have got like…. better boats? It’s a bit British village fete this.”

The opening ceremony also suffered a big blunder as rain caused the big screen to cut out.
