Channel 4 launch new Bake Off ‘spin-off’ show inspired by craze popular with celebrity fans

TV BOSSES are casting for a purl-er of a show on competitive knitting.

Inspired by celebrity fans such as Tom Daley and Ryan Gosling, Channel 4 is making The Game of Wool.

The programme joins the likes of The Great British Bake Off and Great Pottery Throw Down in celebrating traditional crafts.

Top knitters Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell, who design for fashion labels such as Chanel and Vivienne Westwood, will challenge ten contestants.

Each week, the two experts will be joined by a celebrity judge who will help decide who goes through and who will be “cast off” home.

Knitters will take on The Big Knit as a team, and The Wee Knit individually, with filming set to take place in the Scottish countryside.

A Channel 4 spokesman said: “Each week, the competitors must create a whole host of unique makes and larger-than-life sculptural pieces — all made from wool.

“These include clothing, jewellery, home accessories and furniture, and they may even try their hands at ‘yarn bombing’.”

Yarn bombing is a form of street art where colourful knits are put on objects rather than paint and chalk.

Exec producer Wendy Rattray added: “This is knitting but not as you know it.

“Expect a rainbow coloured extravaganza set in the Scottish countryside where brilliant knitters, young and old, will produce the most unexpected and jaw-dropping knits.

“Wool is officially cool and we are delighted to showcase the best of the best in this exciting new format.”

The show will air on More4 and hopefuls can apply via Channel 4’s Take Part page.
