Sea turtle released back into the wild

A sea turtle was released back into the wild on Friday by the fisheries department, Terra Cypria, the environment department, and the British bases an announcement said.

The turtle was release at a beach in Meneou, where a first aid centre operates for injured turtles.

The turtle, Lucy, is a green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and she washed up in the Kourion area of the British Bases.

She remained at the centre for two months and was released after being able to swim again.

Lucy was found ill on the beach.

The release and reintroduction of the sea turtle into its natural environment was carried out in the framework of the “Pandoteira” project. The project deals with the management of the Natura 2000 network in Cyprus and aims to make the network more efficient, functional and sustainable. It is co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, coordinated by the Department of Environment, while 13 other partner organisations from Government Departments, University Institutions, Non-Profit Organisations and private companies are also involved in the project.
