Cindy and Meghan McCain push for Mark Kelly as Kamala Harris' running mate

The late Sen. John McCain's widow and daughter are hoping Kamala Harris chooses Sen. Mark Kelly as her running mate.

The Arizona Democrat won the seat that McCain vacated after his death in 2018, and Cindy and Meghan McCain believe he can help deliver the swing state to the Democrats if he's on the ticket against Donald Trump, reported the New York Times.

“He’s smart, he’s charismatic, he has a vision,” said Cindy McCain. “You look at his record and who he is as a person, he’s a very lovely man, and of course he brings Arizona.”

Kelly bonded with the late senator before entering politics himself over their shared experience as Navy combat pilots, and in 2020 he defeated another military pilot, Martha McSally, who had been appointed to the seat after McCain's death.

Kelly won a full term two years later by soundly defeating the Trump-backed Blake Masters.

The Democratic senator has been “not just respectful” to her father’s legacy, Meghan McCain said, but “I’d go so far as deferential.”

Kelly is considered to be on the shortlist for potential running mates for Harris, who ascended to the Democratic Party's likely nominee after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race due to concerns over his age.
