Four crafty ways to brighten up your days by trying tie-dyeing at home

SUMMER is set to be a real riot of colour this year, with tie-dye leading the trend.

Craft store Hobbycraft has seen sales of tie-dye kits soar by 600 per cent.

Give tie-dye a try at home with these top tips

Want to try it? Take a look at these bright ideas . . .

THE WHITE STUFF: Instead of getting rid of any white clothing that is turning grey, you can use tie-dye to give it a new lease of life.

Many places sell kits with everything you need — and Hobbycraft now has lots at half price, including the tie-dye bumper box kit, down from £33 to £16.50.

Hobbycraft.co.uk also has tutorials you can watch to get you started, or search #tiedyetutorial on TikTok for design tips.

HOME AND TIE: It’s not just clothing that can give you the tie-dye vibe.

You can also treat items like cotton tote bags, cushion covers, pillowcases and even cotton voile curtains to get a whole new look for less.

A great place to look is on arty marketplace Etsy where you’ll find some stunning bags and homewares to give you ideas. You might even be inspired to start your own side hustle once you’ve perfected the technique.

COLOUR ME HAPPY: Indulging in a creative clothes-dying session is a great way to boost mood.

You can express yourself through bright colours, and take a chance on the unexpected as you can’t fully control how the finished item will look. The kids will love it, too, so get them involved.

TRICKS OF THE TRADE: Always wear rubber gloves, so that your hands don’t end up as colourful as your clothing. And for best results, make sure the fabric is neither too wet nor too dry.

Consider how different colours work together. Pink and blue creates a pretty purple, but with green and red you’ll end up with a sludgy shade. But don’t be afraid to experiment — you might discover a tone you love.
