Pakistan’s Foreign Minister reported that Afghan refugees in Europe have carried out “attacks and violent protests” against Pakistani diplomatic missions in Frankfurt, London, and Brussels.
On Thursday, July 25th, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry announced that Ishaq Dar, the country’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, had spoken with Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
During the meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the minister mentioned that efforts are underway to find a sustainable solution for the issue of Afghan migrants in Pakistan.
Dar said that the conversation with Grandi also covered the “recent attacks and violent protests by Afghan expatriates” against Pakistani diplomatic missions in Frankfurt, London, and Brussels.
On July 21, a group of angry protesters entered the Pakistani consulate in Frankfurt and lowered the country’s flag. This event occurred during a demonstration supporting the Pashtun Protection Movement in Pakistan and protesting the death of Gilaman Wazir, a member of the movement.
Pakistani citizens were also involved in the attack. On July 22, the Pakistani Information Minister announced that the passports and IDs of Pakistani citizens involved in the attack on the consulate in Frankfurt would be blocked.
Following the attack, Pakistan summoned the German ambassador. A Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated today that Berlin has pledged to hold the perpetrators accountable.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry reported that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees commended the recent Pakistani government decision to extend the registration cards for refugees.
Both parties agreed to continue their collaboration to advance Pakistan’s cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency and to find sustainable solutions for Afghan refugees.
These incidents highlight the ongoing tensions surrounding Afghan refugees and their impact on diplomatic relations. Both Pakistan and the UN Refugee Agency are working together to address the challenges and seek long-term solutions to improve the situation for Afghan migrants.
