LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)-- A local Housing Louisiana chapter is advocating for better housing conditions in Lafayette.

Residents have been telling News 10 that Himbola Manor Apartments' management does not see about maintenance issues, dealing with mold, water and gas leaks, no hot water or AC and plumbing problems. Some people's doctors have written to management pleading to let residents out of their lease due to serious health concerns.

Chad and Jennifer Landry started a Residents for Organized Housing Louisiana chapter in Lafayette six months ago to figure out solutions for housing affordability and poor living conditions.

"We're all about fighting for what's right and making change," chapter organizer Chad Landry said. "Because if you sit down and wait on things to change on their own, you may be waiting five, ten, 20 years. But if you take action and you speak up, you can make a difference."

Tenants of Himbola expect a difference in living conditions after inspections took place this week following complaint of unresolved maintenance issues.

Landry says tenants should not stop seeking solutions after inspections are over.

"Just don't be afraid to speak up. You know, I know a lot of times people in power try to intimidate people and try to keep them, manipulate them, to try to keep them quiet using different tactics," Chad Landry said. "And we want to let you know that there are people out here in Lafayette, organizations out here in Lafayette, that have your back."

The Residents for Organized Housing Louisiana Lafayette chapter meets at the Robicheaux Center the last Thursday of each month to discuss affordable housing and improving living conditions.
