UT's Dell Seton Medical Center expands neurocritical unit

More help than ever is now available for Austinites suffering from neurological conditions.

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- More help than ever is now available for Austinites suffering from neurological conditions.

On Friday, The University of Texas Austin's Dell Seton Medical Center cut the ribbon on its newly expanded neurocritical care unit, located at 1500 Red River St., according to a release from Ascension Texas.

The unit is the first of its kind in Central Texas and provides advanced care for those suffering from neurological conditions. This new expansion doubles the unit's size, which allows it to take in more patients.

Now, the neurocritical care unit will have space for 30 beds, as well as a wider availability of treatment options for a large range of conditions.

"Where there are beds, more patients will come. So stroke, neurovascular disease, trauma, acute spinal injuries... all of these disorders are quite prevalent in the community. Now that we have the capacity to provide expert care, we're certain our units will fill up," Dr. Shahed Toossi, medical director of the neurocritical care unit said on Friday.

Toossi said she hopes the advanced care the center can now provide will lead to an even larger expansion of the unit in the future.
