Nanaimo, B.C. (July 25, 2024) — 2007-born goaltender Kyan Labbé (Sherbrooke, QC) has signed with the Nanaimo Clippers, the team announced today.

Labbé, 17, joins Nanaimo after backstopping his Magog Cantonniers to a national U18 club championship at the Telus Cup in Cape Breton this year. He stopped 19 of 20 shots in the final against Brandon, after being named the tournament’s top goaltender and finishing undefeated at 5-0 with a .944 save percentage.

It capped off a spectacular final year of minor hockey for Labbé, who went 17-6 in league play with a  .934 save percentage and 1.98 goals against average, the latter two ranking second among all U18 goalies in Quebec. He followed it up with an 11-3 playoff run and was named league postseason Most Valuable Player.

In May, Labbé also committed to Union College, where he will compete in the NCAA’s Division I ECAC Hockey conference.

“We believe we’re bringing in a goalie of the future with Kyan,” said Clippers head coach and general manager Colin Birkas. “He brings a championship pedigree to our team, and was highly courted at the major junior level. We’re looking forward to welcoming Kyan to Nanaimo and helping him develop into a top contributor for Union as well.”

Labbé’s father Jean-François was an American Hockey League Hall of Fame goaltender also; he played in the NHL for Columbus, and later served as goaltending coach for the AHL’s San Diego Gulls from 2016 to 2020.

The Clippers will kick off their 52nd season of BCHL competition in September in search of a sixth Fred Page Cup championship; season tickets are available at tickets.nanaimoclippers.com.
