Ncuti Gatwa & Millie Gibson Promote 'Doctor Who' at Comic-Con, Showrunner Announces New Spinoff

Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson hit the stage at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con on Friday (July 26) in San Diego, Calif.

The Doctor Who stars were joined by the series’ showrunner Russell T Davies for their panel in Hall H.

During the panel, a teaser for the upcoming Christmas special was played, featuring Nicola Coughlan, plus, Russell officially announced some very big news – a new five-part spinoff series is coming!

The War Between The Land And The Sea is in the works and will star Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, as well as returning Doctor Who cast members Jemma Redgrave (as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart) and Alexander Devrient (as Colonel Ibrahim).

Here’s a synopsis: When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.

The spinoff also features the return of the Sea Devils, classic Doctor Who villains who were first seen in 1972.

“I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast,” Russell T Davies said. “And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake The Whoniverse to its foundations. When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.“

Filming is set to begin in August and the spinoff will air on Disney+ where available and BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.
