In tricky conditions with plenty of riders falling, Henderson finished in 41 minutes and nine seconds to claim silver, behind Grace Brown of Australia, who was a remarkable 90 seconds faster.

In a tense finish, American Chloe Dygert fell less than a second short of Henderson’s time to end up in third place.

It was a nail-biting wait as Dygert rounded the last corner with the clock ticking down.

Henderson – from Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire – pulled off the first shock of the Olympics, after standing outside of the favourites ahead of the Games.

Dame Kelly Holmes, sitting about 10 seats away from me under a black umbrella, was up on her feet, reliving her Athens 2004 experience.

Eurosport pundit Jo Rowsell said: “That was simply phenomenal. That is a career best result for her, out of everything she’s won previously, this is by far the best.”

The 25-year-old was previously a national champion in the slalom as a teenager before leaving the Winter sport for cycling.

The race was hampered by a number of key crashes amid the tricky conditions.
