The Taliban Ministry of Finance has signed a contract with the private sector to install 33 electronic scanners at 12 customs points in Afghanistan.

The Taliban’s Ministry of Finance announced that the private sector will invest 8 billion Afghanis in this project. The agreement was signed on Saturday, July 27th, in the presence of the Deputy Economic Head of the Taliban’s Council of Ministers.

The Taliban has stated that these scanners will be installed to prevent the smuggling of goods. According to the contract, the private sector will scan all types of goods at the ports of Torkham, Hairatan, Spin Boldak, Islam Qala, Torghundi, Nimroz, Abu Nasr Farahi, Khost, Paktia, Aqina, and Shir Khan.

The installation of these scanners is expected to take two years, and the Taliban has indicated that around 2,000 people will be employed in this sector.

The project aims to enhance the efficiency and security of border controls, although its success will depend on the effective implementation and maintenance of the scanners.

The deployment of these scanners may also impact trade flows and the broader economy, as enhanced border security could both deter illegal activities and potentially streamline legitimate trade processes.
