My partner has cancer but I want to leave him

DEAR DEIDRE: HOW can I leave my partner after he has been diagnosed with cancer?

I’m 65, he’s 70 and we’ve been together for five years.

I’d been planning to leave because we bicker non-stop when he was suddenly diagnosed with cancer.

He is now in remission but we’re both desperately unhappy being together.

Now I feel obliged to stay despite it meaning I’d be committed to a life of misery.

How can I end this relationship peacefully?

DEIDRE SAYS: This is a complicated situation but you must do what feels right for you both.

If you are unhappy then it is likely he will be too.

It’s time to talk through your relationship and see what would work best for both of you. He may also like to separate.

One thing is for sure, you won’t resolve anything by bottling up your feelings and pretending everything is fine.

If you decide to call it a day, my support pack Ending A Relationship will help you to move forward.
