Full list of Cineworlds closing in 2024 as hundreds of jobs axed

The chain’s overhaul will see around 25 sites closed across the UK.

Cineworld is the second largest chain of cinema theatres in the World. The entire worldwide chain was forced to close during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic causing severe financial pressures upon the business. Major theatrical releases have also been postponed by film studios exerting further pressure on the Cineworld business. One of the nation’s cinema chains is reportedly planning to axe hundreds of jobs and close at least 25 of its venues.

Cineworld has been battling a multibillion dollar debt that forced it to seek bankruptcy protection in 2022, Sky News reports.

That crisis saw it delisted from the London Stock Exchange last August, with the prospective closures thought to represent a bid to lower operating costs in the UK.

Plans for the restructuring, as part of ongoing conversations with several commercial landlords in the UK, would see some 12 venues close immediately with the remainder expected to shut down toward the end of the summer

This in addition to seeking reduced rents on a further 50 cinemas across the country.

Cineworld’s operations are thought to have been affected in the bigger picture by the growth of streaming services, delayed releases due to industry strikes, and lower demand from customers due to increased cost of living.

There’s talk that other cinema operators may be preparing to step in and take over at some of the sites due to be shut down, though it’s unclear at this stage who and how long exactly this would take.

So far, the chain has confirmed that the following six venues will be closed: Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon Circus.

The remaining 19 have not yet been named, but here’s a full list of all 100 sites at potential risk.
