Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads Canada over Greece despite 34 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo

It was ugly but when all was said and done, Canada got what they deserved after leading from wire to wire. Despite Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 34 points the final score was 86-79 for the North Americans over Greece. RJ Barrett tallied a team-high 23 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander put in 21 points, seven assists, and five rebounds for the team coached by Jordi Fernandez. Dillon Brooks followed with 14 points, despite fouling out with three minutes left in the Gameday 1 contest of the preliminary round of the 2024 Olympic Games.

Tough finish for Giannis and the Greeks but an incredible effort to push Canada to the brink. Canada doesn’t have much size but they threw waves of defenders at Giannis and he still put up 34 points 11/17 fg & 12/15 ft. Must-win games against Spain (Tues) & Australia (Fri) ahead. – 5:15 PM

Jon Horst: This year, I think the fact that we have a set coaching staff, a style of play, a core group of guys centered around Dame and Giannis, Brook and Khris, Bobby and Pat and now an offseason to build out the rest of the roster, I think that’s going to be really beneficial for us. Even with that though, we still had a lot of on-court successes last year with the core group that we had. (Our) big three was a plus-18 net rating, second best in the entire league. -via New York Times / July 26, 2024
