Third body found in car that went off cliff near Devil’s Slide

The vehicle plunged hundreds of feet down to the ocean in Pacifica on Friday morning.

Authorities retrieved a third body on Saturday from a car that plunged off a cliff Friday morning near Devil’s Slide in Pacifica.

The car went off the road on southbound Highway 1 around 11 a.m. Friday, falling hundreds of feet down to the shoreline and surf. Described as a gray two-door sedan, the vehicle came to a rest about 300 feet down an embankment.

Firefighters performing a cliff rescue were able to retrieve two victims that day, but called off their efforts due to worsening conditions.

“As far as the crash goes, in general it’s still under investigation at this time,” said California Highway Patrol Officer Andrew Barclay. “They had to wait until (Saturday) morning to get the vehicle recovered due to some extremely unsafe conditions (Friday) — the tide, and just everything else that comes with the treacherous coastline.”

The identity of the three victims is pending while the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office notifies their next of kin.

The third body is likely the last in the wreckage, said Barclay. “My understanding is they’re done — the vehicle has been searched and everything.”
