Robert Downey Jr. to Return for 'Avengers: Doomsday,' But He's Not Playing Iron Man!

Robert Downey Jr. is officially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in two new Avengers movies! However, he won’t be suiting up as Iron Man again.

During Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday night (July 27), Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the Iron Man star would be returning to the franchise to play a new character in the newly reworked Avengers 5 and Avengers 6.

The actor’s new role has been revealed. Two other huge names will also be returning to the MCU for the projects!

Avengers 5, which was once titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is now going to be called Avengers: Doomsday. It is scheduled to premiere in May 2026 and will introduce Robert as Doctor Doom.

The movie will be directed by fan-favorite pair Anthony and Joe Russo, the brothers who last directed Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Earlier this month it was rumored that they would be making a comeback.

Doomsday will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, which is expected to premiere in 2027.
