McMichael honored in Austin ahead of HOF induction

Austin (KXAN) - The University of Texas and Longhorn Legends honored Steve "Bam Bam" McMichael Saturday at Scholz Garten on being inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Scholz Garten.

Originally from Freer, Texas, McMichael played for the 'Horns from 1976-1979 as a Defensive Tackle. Fellow defensive lineman in the 1970s Brad Shearer talked highly on his two-year teammate.

"Guy is an icon, totally deserving of this award... kudos to him," said Shearer. "He's brought great honor to the University of Texas and all of his friends and teammates and I just wish him well."

McMichael had a 15 year NFL career with the New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers, and most notably, The Chicago Bears.

The Super Bowl champion also made a name for himself with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as a one-time WCW United States Champion.

McMichael could not attend this honoring nor the Hall of Fame ceremony next week in Canton, Ohio as he is currently battling Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The former Longhorn and Chicago Bear was diagnosed with ALS in 2021.

Former Texas Quarterback Randy McEachern talked about what the support and this gathering means for McMichael and his teammates.

"We're thankful for UT for putting this on. For the guys to show up and pay tribute to Steve is quite a deal. It's a homecoming for a lot of us."

The NFL Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Saturday, August 3rd in Canton, Ohio.
