To the editor: Misleading statements about election security are dangerous

In today’s hyperconnected world, online political conspiracy theories can spread at alarmingly rapid rates, and it’s no secret there’s a festering distrust of our country’s electoral system. According to a national poll conducted earlier this year, just 61 percent of registered Republicans are confident their vote will be counted accurately in this year’s election, compared with 90 percent of registered Democrats. As concerns about fair and secure elections grow louder, charged political rhetoric has added fuel to the fire. Recently, a conservative activist said there is “zero chance of a free and fair election” in 2024.
