Crater Lake in Oregon has been ranked as the most sought after "low-key" spot in the US, based on its high number of Google searches and five-star rating on TripAdvisor.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – One of Oregon’s most beloved natural wonders - and the state's only national park - has topped the charts in a study ranking the best “hidden gem destinations” in the U.S.

A study conducted by Places to Travel found Crater Lake was the most sought after “low-key” spot, based on its number of Google searches across the country. The ranking took nearly 2,700 into account based on TripAdvisor lists in all 50 states.

"Hidden gems across America provide an excellent alternative to crowded, popular destinations, adding a unique charm to your travels,” Places to Travel CEO Jason Wilson said. “Venturing off the beaten path can be incredibly rewarding and allows you to explore a diverse range of regions you may otherwise have missed.”

Crater Lake, a Klamath County destination known for its clear blue water and stunning campgrounds, has an average of 182,100 monthly searches on Google. It also has a five-star rating with more than 500 reviews on TripAdvisor.

“The scenic blue lake is in the state's southwestern region and was formed approximately 7,700 years ago. Globally, the lake is the tenth deepest in the world and claims the top for depth in the U.S.,” according to the study. “There is plenty to do around the lake, including hikes, fishing, and even skiing.”
