The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Serbia has announced that at least 30 refugees from Afghanistan and Nepal were injured following the overturning of a vehicle in the southeastern part of the country.

Serbian state media outlet RTS reported that the accident occurred on Friday, July 26, near the border with Bulgaria and the town of Blace in the city of Blapanjka.

According to reports, these refugees, citizens of Afghanistan and Nepal, are currently receiving medical treatment for their injuries.

Previously, similar traffic accidents and shootings in Serbia have resulted in numerous refugee casualties and injuries.

Reports indicate that illegal migration from Serbia to European countries has increased, with the number of migrants reaching around 1,500 per day.

Serbia, located along the Balkan route, is a major transit point for migrants from the Middle East, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nepal, heading towards European countries.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), approximately 100,000 refugees have used this route to travel to Europe in 2023.

The plight of Afghan refugees extends beyond the borders of Serbia, affecting neighboring countries and Europe more broadly. Many refugees are facing harsh conditions and forced deportation, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The lack of adequate support and protection forces them into increasingly dangerous and precarious situations.

In Europe, the situation is equally dire, with many countries grappling with the challenge of managing and accommodating an influx of refugees while dealing with the complexities of forced deportations.

This crisis underscores the urgent need for comprehensive international cooperation and humanitarian assistance to address the immediate needs and long-term solutions for displaced individuals.
