Princess Leia’s Star Wars gold bikini sold at auction for £136,000

Any real Star Wars fan will know the costume.

Any Star Wars fan will know what Carrie Fisher’s character Princess Leia wore in ‘Return of the Jedi’ while being in captivity by the alien monster Jabba the Hutt.

It is an easy win at a pub quiz – a gold bikini-style costume, which has just sold at auction for £136,000.

Jabba captured the princess after she tried to rescue Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford.

Leia then went on to strangle slug-like Jabba with the chain around her neck – all the while wearing the gold bikini.

It is one of the most memorable, weird – and controversial for how sexualised the portrayal was – moments in the 1983 film Episode VI of the trilogy.

Actress Fisher had said she thought director George Lucas was ‘kidding’ when he showed her the costume.

The outfit includes a bikini top, bikini plates, hip rings, an armlet and bracelet.

In an interview a month before her death in 2016, she told NPR she felt ‘nearly naked, which is not a style choice for me’, adding that it made her ‘very nervous’.

Created by the Star Wars concept sculptor Richard Miller, the garment sold at the Heritage Auctions in Dallas, on Friday.

The company said in a statement on X: ‘Yes, it’s true! *The* gold bikini sold for $175,000 at our Hollywood Signature auction.

‘It comes with a signed LOA from Lorne Peterson, ILM VFX veteran of 33 years, who hired chief sculptor Richard Miller to create Leia’s costume.’

Meanwhile, a miniature of a Y-Wing starfighter ship, ‘flown’ by Gold Leader, who helped Luke Skywalker in a mission to destroy the Death Star in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, went for £1.21 million after a bidding war.
