Miguel Berchelt stopped Jeremy Triana in the third round Saturday night at the Palenque del Recinto Ferial in Tlaxcala, Mexico. Berchelt improved to 40-3, 36 knockouts.

From the opening bell, Berchelt was the aggressor, attempting to cut the ring off as Triana used as much of the small ring as possible to create distance and separation from Berchelt. After successfully cutting off the ring, Berchelt was able to attack and repeatedly land punches and combinations on Triana.

Berchelt landed straight right to the head, followed by a combination to the body towards the end of the first round. Berchelt landed the same series of punches early in round two that forced Triana to fight off his back foot. Later in round two, a left hook to the body hurt Triana that forced him back against the ropes. Triana had to fend off a Berchelt onslaught until the bell sounded to end the round.

Early in round three, Berchelt pinned Triana against the ropes, landing a devastating left hook followed by a left uppercut to the head. Triana looked spent and gassed from the impact of the punches. Another series of left hooks and uppercuts sent Triana reeling across the ring. Berchelt went in, where he landed two right uppercuts, followed by two left hooks to the head, prompting referee Cesar Castanon to step in and stop the fight at 2:36.

In his previous fight, Berchelt, who resides in Merida, Mexico, stopped Diego Ruiz after round two of his last fight on October 14.

Both wins took place at 135 pounds. In his debut at lightweight, Berchelt suffered a knockout loss to Jeremia Nakathila in June 2022. The loss to Nakathila took place 13 months after Berchelt was viciously knocked out by Oscar Valdez.

The 32-year-old Berchelt won the WBC world junior lightweight title in January 2017, knocking out Francisco Vargas in one of that year’s most entertaining fights. He would make six successful defenses until he lost the title to Valdez.

Triana, who resides in Cartagena, Colombia, falls to 15-5-3, 13 KOs. In his previous fight on July 22 of last year, Triana fought to a majority decision draw against Manuel Gonzalez.

Prior to the Berchelt fight, Triana was unbeaten in four previous fights.

In the co-feature, fringe junior welterweight contender David Moreno improved to 17-1-1, 10 KOs, stopping Elvis Torres (20-4-2, 11 KOs) in the sixth round.

Both fighters currently reside in Tijuana. It was a homecoming for Moreno, who was born in Tlaxcala.

Fringe junior featherweight contender Jose Israel Ramirez of Mexicali stopped Venezuela’s Edixon Perez (28-11-1, 10 KOs) in the fourth round. Ramirez improved to 21-2, 11 KOs.

In a clash of Female flyweights, Marilyn Badillo of Cuautitlán Izcalli, Mexico remained unbeaten, defeating Mexicali’s Alma Meraz Rodriguez (10-4-1, 2 KOs) by unanimous decision. Badillo improved to 18-0-1, 3 KOs.

Saturday’s card was promoted by Fernando Beltran’s Zanfer Boxing Promotions.
